Philosophy Statement

The Family Centre creates its own community which belongs to all children, families, educators and to those who work alongside us. This foundation fosters an inclusive, democratic vision and a sense of reciprocity extending beyond our walls to local spaces and broader community.

We recognize that children hold the rights of active citizenship and are contributors to society from birth.

We honour and respect children’s individuality, uniqueness and differences. It is our
belief that every child’s needs, thoughts, ideas and contributions deserve to be listened to, considered and valued.

We believe that children are naturally inquisitive with a capacity for deep thought and
are complex protagonists in their own learning. We co-create responsive environments, alongside the children, which invite collaboration, exchange of ideas and reflection.

We engage in educational research through a reciprocal process between children and educators to plan projected curriculum, making learning visible through pedagogical documentation.

We commit to nurturing well-being through exploring, investigating and connecting to natural spaces within our community. We foster environmental stewardship to the living world, encouraging ideas and awareness of sustainability.

We build trusting, responsive relationships through open communication and mutual respect between and amongst children, families and educators. Families are recognized as meaningful partners and contributors to their child’s experience at the Family Centre.

The Family Centre team embraces complex and diverse approaches through ongoing professional learning, which creates a continuous movement in our practice.
