Preschool

In our preschool programs, we are influenced by pedagogical frameworks, including Ontario’s Pedagogy, How Does Learning Happen? and the Reggio Emilia approach to learning and care. Children are viewed as capable protagonists of their own learning and we, the educators, are co-learners.  We scaffold children’s explorations as they question, investigate and learn through play. Materials and experiences are  intentionally offered which support the child’s theories, thoughts and ideas. The preschool program offers a  variety of loose parts and open ended materials to encourage the child’s imagination and individuality through play. This approach to learning inspires each child to think, to investigate and to explore in unique, creative and diverse ways.

‘The 100 Languages of Children’, inspired by the Reggio Emelia approach (Loris Malaguzzi), is a metaphor which refers to the infinite ways children express themselves. We acknowledge children as competent learners and expression is recognized through the use of verbal language, facial expression, art, music, and the unique use of  materials. Preschoolers are offered opportunities to explore many art mediums including clay, paint, sculpture, mark making experiences as well as dance and movement, dramatic expression, using musical instruments, singing and more.

In preschool, we celebrate each child’s individuality and growing sense of  independence. Educators foster a child’s sense of autonomy by offering choices, through being active listeners and using a shared decision making process. We also encourage both a sense of responsibility and a growing awareness of the child’s  own physical and emotional well being.  We value the importance of being in relationships with each other and engaging in a collaborative approach to learning.

The preschool programs spend a great amount of time, without constraints, immersed in the natural world. These experiences encourage a deep and respectful relationship with nature and the land. Children have freedom to explore and be curious in a variety of outdoor spaces. Our curriculum flows naturally between  indoor and outdoor spaces through the use of invitations to play and open ended materials. Some experiences the preschool children can be observed participating in are: rolling down hills, climbing fallen trees, hiking on nature paths, observing and researching local wildlife and exploring forested areas.
